The future for CraneHigh School is good because Crane has so many positive things going on here for the students, including program such as After School Matters. After School Matters is program that pays kids while helping them learn job skills that will help them get jobs in the future. Crane also offers Aim High, which helps kids in different subjects like, Reading, Math, and English. Also there are extra curriculum activities, such as football, basketball, baseball and many more. Crane also offers many clubs like the Debate Team, Recycle Club, Garden Club and many others. Mr. Smith, the Principle, is always trying to do something that can help Crane and the students to give us an opportunity for higher learning. After all the negative events Crane has had over the past couple of years we finally have a plan for the future to look for.
The Garden Club at Crane started last year with an idea: the planting of tulips around the football field. The plan for a garden in Crane was started by Ms. Chana and Mr. Thompson of the science department. They believed that a garden would green the campus and beautify the environment.
There are roughly 15 students and a series of teachers who are assisting with the Garden Club. Presently the Garden Club is going through a grant writing phase where they are trying to obtain money for the program. Some of the students have been selected for different teams to carry out work when it is needed. Others are waiting for the completion of the grant so that they may assist in facilitating the completion of the garden. Even though this is a 2-year plan, with expansion, project groups are already put together. The Garden Club believes that when the grant is completed more students will participate. The Garden Club is home to many inspirational students who feel that we need to take care of our environment. If we do not take care of our environment then who will?
On October 6, 2008, a 24-year-old man boarded a CTA bus and shot a young girl. 17-year-old Kiyanna Salter was shot near 71st street in Woodlawn. Before her death, Salter attends a high school by the name of Percy Jullian.
Milton Wardlow was caught because of the video camera on the bus, and his mother knew it was him, so she turned him in to the authorities.
It is bad the way people can just kill each other like that without any sympathy. Young men are throwing their lives away because they have to face the consequences. Then they will be locked up or worst, they might end up dead.
I think if everybody comes together as a group, then our neighborhoods would be better than they are right now. Other people will notice that life can be short because of the way Kiyanna died. Kids my age and adults my parents’ age will realize the importance of preventing violence.
Guns are big problems because kids don’t know what they are doing and if you notice, teenagers are doing all the shooting and killing.
Because of this I think guns should not be allowed in the city of Chicago.
I am currently involved in a program known as After School Matters (ASM). They offer different activities such as sports, asset mapping, and culinary arts that you can participate in. The one I am currently involved in is Community Asset Mapping, but this year we have been doing journalism. We plan on making a blog about Crane that will be on the internet you can go on and read anytime.
I think ASM is a good program because it offers students a positive way to earn money. Also it gives the students involved a way to gain job skills. You get the experience of working a job and learning how to conduct yourself in a respectful manner. Students would not have to worry about being on the streets. Plus, the program is held inside of the school so you don’t have to travel after school to get there, because you will already be in the building. By earning money it lets students know how it feels to work a real job and the feeling that you have accomplished something, also it is fun and constructive. Working this job you get the experience of working a real job. Also by going through this program you know how to produce in a fast paced working environment. So when you get a real job you will know how to behave. Plus when you go to apply for a real job you can tell them you worked in a program that made a newspaper, and that can be something they’re looking for or that will just let them know that you have some skills. The program is three days a week (MON, WED, THU) for three hours. It last for three weeks and in my opinion it’s a good program to be in. By me participating in this program I gain valuable skills that I can use in the future, so it will be a good decision to join (ASM).
My experiences at crane High School has been jam packed with clubs an activities to keep me in school and off the streets while enjoying that time as well. One of those experiences was on the garden club. Yeah I know people will say who wants to play with dirt. But that is not all what it is about. It provided the participants with how to grow different plants because all plants don’t grow the same and at the same time. It also it provided much needed service learning hours.
Another activity I participated in is the one I Attend now which is Community asset mapping. This consists of photography, journalism, and editing. I think Its a good program because it helps expands how you write and your understanding of what you write about. It is also a good program because it is good for learning new social skills.
Finally a program that I participate in and many others do as well is A.I.M My experiences at crane High school has been jam packed with clubs an activities to keep me in school and off the streets while enjoying that time as well. Finally a program that I participate in and many others do as well is A.I.M high. Which is a program that you can attend to earn credits? This program is excellent because it gives you a second chance to earn back missed credits. Also this program is good because it helps you by not having to attend summer school.

Have you ever heard of After School Matters(ASM)? As their website indicates, ASM is a non-profit organization that partners with the City of Chicago, the Chicago Park District, the Chicago Department of Children and Youth Services, the Chicago Public Library, the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, and Community-Based Organizations to expand out-of-school opportunities for Chicago teens. Most ASM programs are open to Chicago teens ages 14-19, except for Advanced Apprenticeships (ages 14-21) and Internships (ages 16-21). Priority is given to teens that attend participating high schools. This program allows students to receive job experience, get paid, and become more familiar with students.

ASM here at Crane runs from 3:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m three times a week. ASM keeps high school students off the streets, allows them to be able to learn skills, and make money legally and constructively. ASM programs helps you better your skills that you would need in the future with careers you choose. ASM has wonderful instructors that keeps you busy, on task, and also shows you that there are certain consequences when we are not punctual. ASM is a wonderful program that allows students from different age ranges to come together to have fun and also work into completing the task at hand.
After Schools Matters has been in our school for five years. It steadily encourages students to become a part of their community. The students work on cool stuff like Community Asset Mapping-Journalism, Life Guarding, Flag-way leagues, and Sports 37. Here at Crane many students are dedicated to Community Asset Mapping/ Journalism, where two lovely instructors Jon and Lara Kelland encourages students to learn how to become better writers and write good stories.

S.A.S.S.Y (Save A Sister Save Yourself) is a group of girls trying to learn how to become young ladies. The S.A.S.S.Y group talks about what kind of clothes to wear and how to cover your self up. They also tell you do not worry about boys because you get attach to them. Always keep your mind on track never to let anyone come between you and your education. They also make you feel like you are somebody, when you feel like you falling they will help you get your self together. They make you feel like a lady rather than something your not. They do not put you down, but they make you happy. When men call women the name female dogs, S.A.S.S.Y would say never let them call you that because that mean they don’t care about you. S.A.S.S.Y is a very great program you will feel safe to tell them thing.
On November 4, 2008, Barack Obama was elected president. It feels good to know that now we have a president that is going to try and fix a lot of the problems that are messed up in our society today. He is going to need some time to correct the situation: lowering middle-class taxes, hiring more teachers and paying them more, creating good health benefits and more jobs, and trying to send home as many people as possible from Iraq. As a result, if Obama accomplishes these actions, it will make me more proud than last year because George Bush was making things even worse in our country: the war was going on and on, Bush was spending too much money on the war, and our economy was getting worse. The hope is that under the Obama administration the middle-class taxes will go down, more people will get employed, and sending people home from Iraq will make more families happy.
After School Matters have many programs. The one I was involved in was called Young People’s Project. This program teaches you all types of math, such as algebra and fractions. Algebra has to do with variables and letters. Fractions have to do with numbers like ratios, which means two numbers that are related in a part-to-whole relationship. For example, 2:3 boys and girls or two to three. This means that there are two boys and three girls.
We had workshops that our College Math Literacy Workers (CMLW)’s taught us, which includes things like proportions and distributive property.
In addition to this we learned that with proportions, if two quantities have the same constant multiple, they have the same constant ratio. And also with distributive property, we combined addition with multiplication. After we learned those skills, we taught it to kids at the Major Adams Program,
Lastly, the kids we taught ending up liking the program. We got rewarded with a stipend for the workshops. We met new people and realized how much we enjoy teaching. That was the best reward of all.
a thing of the future everybody should want it, but not everyone knows how to grasp hold of it. In college we enter different fields of study so that we get ready for a promising career in the future. College prepares us for the technological advances that are to come in the future. If we maintain good grades throughout high school and enter promising colleges, we might grasp hold of a good education. There are constant changes in the technology field, and as long as technology changes there will be a need for people to work with it. The only way we can be knowledgeable about new technology is if we study and go to school.
Scholarships, student loans, financial aid, are here to help students pay for college. If you have your mind already set on college and you plan to attend, then college should be thought about your freshman year. You should maintain good grades and join programs and groups that are a part of your school. Throughout the year you should maintain acceptable grades and try to score high on your ACT. GPAs are also important for entering most schools and applying for scholarships.
Now good grades is not the only thing that can get you into college and maybe you didn’t score that well on your ACT, but there are other programs that allows students that mess up in school to get their selves back on the right track. It is not to late, colleges would work with you if you put the time in to work on it yourself.
